CAT Scans

The Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT or CT) scan is a development in medical technology that takes x-rays to a much more detailed level. The images produced from this procedure can show cross-sectional and even 3-D views of the body’s soft tissue organs. Since its emergence in the 1970’s, the CT scan has had a number of useful applications, such as aiding in the early detection of abnormal internal growths, such as cancer.

Unlike normal x-ray machines, CAT machines surround the entire body with a donut-shaped mechanism. The patient lays on a movable platform which slides the body part to be examined inside the scanning tube. The x-rays are taken in a spiral motion. The scanning machine inside the ring moves in one full circle, recording images, and then moves forward a bit and scans the next slice.

Patients are given an intravenous injection of a contrast solution so that their organs will show up more clearly during the scan. Sometimes, people may experience a poor reaction to this substance, resulting in rashes and hives. In the worst cases, patients may experience an anaphylactic reaction or even kidney failure.

Despite the many ways CAT scans can help with medical diagnoses and treatments, they can also be dangerous if not performed correctly. In general, however, these procedures are relatively low-risk. The most common issue is an adverse reaction to the contrasting solution. Pregnant women who receive CT scans also run the risk of injuring their fetuses.
