Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Sexually transmitted diseases, also known as STDs or venereal disease, are bacterial or viral infections that are passed from person to person through sexual intercourse. These illnesses can affect members of both gender groups, and if a pregnant woman contracts an STD, her child may catch the infection as well. Aside from the physical difficulties caused by venereal disease, there are many negative social connotations that are attached to them, as well. For these reasons, it is extremely important for a physician to properly diagnose and treat a patient who believes that he or she has an STD.
Types of STDs
Each year, there are over 15 million cases of STDs reported in cities across the United States. These cases involve the 25 different types of venereal disease present in this country. Some of the more common sexually transmitted diseases include the following:
- Human Papilloma Virus, or HPV (no known cure)
- Herpes Virus (no known cure)
- Hepatitis Virus (no known cure)
- HIV/AIDS (no known cure)
- Syphilis
- Trichomoniasis
- Chlamydia
- Gonorrhea
- Pubic lice, or crabs
It is very important for patients who believe they have contracted an STD to seek medical attention immediately. If a physician fails to diagnose your condition, or if you receive a misdiagnosis, then you may have the right to take legal action against the person or institution responsible for this error.
