The Computerized Axial Tomography scan takes x-rays that are more detailed than common x-rays. One advantage of CAT scans over traditional x-rays is that they can show cross-sectional and 3-D views of the body's soft tissue organs.
Before the CAT scan is performed, a patient is given an injection of a contrast solution so that their organs will show up more clearly. These contrast agents can lead to possible injuries including rashes and hives, among others.
