What does board certified mean?

There are a number of different medical boards that administer certifications to physicians and health care providers who apply and meet certain preset requirements. Most commonly, when a doctor is “board certified,” the term refers to certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), which encompasses 24 different medical boards that span a range of specializations. In order to receive this certification, a physician must complete a number of tests and peer evaluations.
